Great news for GTA VI and PlayStation Plus games for August and some disappointing news for the release of Knights of the Old Republic. It’s all on GameSpot News today.
A report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreyer gives us the largest Grand Theft Auto VI dump we’ve ever gotten, both for details on what to expect in the game, as well as behind-the-scenes at Rockster about its development. First, let’s talk about the contents of the game itself.
Bloomberg reported that the game will feature a Latina character, making it the first playable woman in a GTA campaign. This character will be part of a pair of characters that are supposed to be influenced by Bonnie and Clyde, the real-life couple who robbed a bank with their gang during the Great Depression. No word on whether players will play as another character in the pairing.
The game has an internal codename, Project Americas, as it was initially supposed to show the vast swathes of the American continent. However, the game has been scaled back over time, and will be set in the depiction of the fictional universe of Miami; Underworld City. The report includes details that the game will still be quite large, with more internal locations than previous GTA games, and that the developer will add additional cities and content over time.
But when can you play it? Some developers on the team told Bloomberg that it will be released sometime in the financial publisher Take-Two 2024, which runs from April 2023 to March 2024. Although some interviewees believe the game won’t make it to that window, nor will it launch. before 2024.
The game has been in development since 2014, which if it came out in 2024 would mean development would take ten years, which is the period of time that Rockstar has gone through some dramatic changes. In 2018, hundreds of Rockstar employees spoke out about crisis and toxicity issues with the developer, which led to some huge cultural shifts at the company.
Employees reported to Schreier that morale at Rockstar was at an all-time high, thanks to scheduling changes, the conversion of contractors to full-time employees, and the resignation of several managers who were deemed abusive and difficult to work with by workers below. This change in culture has directed the content of the game itself, with the goal of not “beating” marginalized groups, and while previous posts have been largely a satirical look at the United States, several staff members in the report noted that parodying the US today’s countries is more difficult. Thanks to the US already being a parody of itself.
So if you’re disappointed in having to wait for GTA VI, don’t worry – we’re already experiencing it.
