Study: Earth’s clean air has harmful effects on climate – Newsmax

Researchers using a combination of satellite observations discovered that The effect of air pollution on the climate It has decreased by as much as 30% from 2,000 levels, Science reports.

Although this is positive for public health, it is also detrimental to global warming or climate change, science has noted.

Clean air effectively boosted the overall warming of carbon dioxide emitted during the same time from 15% to 50%, according to Johannes Coase, a climate scientist at the University of Leipzig, who conducted the research.

Science reports that Quaas’ new research originated from last year’s United Nations climate assessment. Aerosol declines are shown in North America and Europe but no clear global trends. Quaas and his co-students think two NASA satellites, Terra and Aqua, in operation since 1999 and 2002, could help.

But one instrument on the Aqua and Terra also showed a decrease in reflected light. Models suggest that the decrease in aerosols is partly responsible.

From 2000 to 2019, the haze decreased over North America, Europe and East Asia, although it continued to multiply over coal-dependent India. Quaas and the researchers found significant decreases in cloud drop concentrations in the same areas where the aerosols decreased.

Note that science will grow as air quality continues to improve around the world. The answer is not to continue to pollute, said Jan Cermak, a remote sensing scientist at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

“Air pollution is killing people,” Cermak said. “We need clean air.”

Instead, efforts to reduce greenhouse gases must be redoubled, he says, as the Earth warms every year.

“I think their conclusions are valid,” said James Hansen, a retired NASA climate scientist.

It’s an impressive piece of scientific investigation, Hansen said, because no satellite can directly measure global aerosols over this entire period.

“It’s like deducing the properties of unobserved dark matter by looking at its gravitational effects,” he said.

Hansen expects there will be follow-up work as researchers seek to quantify the increase in warming.
